Giving Tuesday: Together, we help.

The Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday is GivingTuesday. It’s a time when Canadians, charities, and businesses come together to celebrate giving and participate in activities that support charities and non-profits — to thank, help, give, show kindness, and share what they have with those in need.

All year long, as part of our agency’s commitment to giving back, we are proud members of the Upside Foundation of Canada. The partners of Now Impact Studio & King Street Media have pledged a portion of their equity for charity.

Every act of generosity counts. Everybody has something to give.

In 2020, millions of Canadians came together (from a distance) across the country. Within each community, acts of kindness and giving showcased our resiliency and generosity of spirit.

We are experiencing a time of unprecedented need, and also witnessing unprecedented generosity. Canadians have responded generously since the pandemic hit and GivingTuesday is a time for all Canadians to celebrate generosity and continue to give together.

GivingTuesday is the world’s largest generosity movement.

It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good — make someone smile, help a neighbour or stranger, show up for an issue you care about or give some of what you have to those in need. Over the past 9 years, it has since grown into a global movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

GivingTuesday in Canada was founded in 2013 by CanadaHelps, GIV3 and several other founding partners. GivingTuesday now has active movements in 75 countries, collaborating year-round to inspire generosity around the world.

The impact of GivingTuesday goes well beyond charitable donations, inspiriting giving in all its forms.

So far more than 7,500 Canadian charities, businesses, and community groups have used GivingTuesday to rally generosity and help make the world a better place in countless ways. Around the world, there are official GivingTuesday movements in over 70 countries.

What can businesses do to support?

Here are some ideas from the GivingTuesday Canada team to inspire your participation:

  1. Raise money for an organization or cause you and your employees are passionate about.

  2. Share kindness with your neighbours. Safely check on those who are alone, elderly or may need help with errands or a friendly call.

  3. Show gratitude and shine a light on your employees and customers thanking them for their support on your social channels.

  4. Use your social channels to share a story about who is inspiring you to help and why your community is so important to you. Add a #GivingTuesday Facebook frame to your profile or an Instagram sticker to your story.

  5. If you are a restaurant or store, make a few extra dishes or package excess inventory and give to a few elderly neighbours or essential workers.

  6. If you have a storefront, coordinate a drive of specific goods and coordinate pickup with a non-profit that can get them to the right people or give to members of your community in need.

  7. Share your giving story by posting an #UNselfie - a post on social media that shares a message about why you give back. Download the template here.

  8. Collaborate with other businesses or charities in your community to create a #GivingTuesdayCa campaign. Collect warm clothes or raise funds for a holiday package with food and gifts for local families in need.

  9. Run a social media contest to raise awareness about the #GivingTuesdayCa movement and charities in your community.

  10. Help inspire others by sharing good news stories on your social media channels. Showcase all the good happening in your community. See #GivingTuesdayCA’s InstagramFacebook, and Twitter channels for inspiration.
